Wax & Wayne Series – Book 2: Shadows of Self – By Brandon Sanderson

Jared,

I was wondering if I’d be posting a review of this before you and it appears that I am. Now to get Bands of Mourning done and then on to the Stormlight Archive. It’s my goal to read the first two books before the third is published this Fall.

shadowsofself.jpgTitle: Shadows of Self
Series: Mistborn; Wax and Wayne Series; Book 2
Author: Brandon Sanderson
Genre: Fantasy
Audience: Adult
ROTS Setting: UU/Cosmere, Early Industrial, Unique Magic, Steampunk/Western
Synopsis: This bustling, optimistic, but still shaky society now faces its first instance of terrorism, crimes intended to stir up labor strife and religious conflict. Wax and Wayne, assisted by the lovely, brilliant Marasi, must unravel the conspiracy before civil strife stops Scadrial’s progress in its tracks.
Recommendation: Adult or late teen. This book is highly recommended. However I do suggest reading the Mistborn Trilogy first, but that technically isn’t required.

What’s there to say? The book is amazing…..as usual. I honestly can’t wait to read the next one and I’m super excited for the book after that to be published.

Everything was expanded and deepened a bit with this book, and getting to figure out more about what happened in to get to this point was really nice. There were so many little details that flesh-out the world and insights into the broader perspective. We’ve had the hook and now we’re getting more of the meat.

Wax is a touch flat….but that’s mostly because he’s so single-minded which leads to my only issue. My one and only complaint/nitpick is with Wax and the plot……it feels like his past is being used as a crutch for the plot. It undermines his character too.

Wayne is amazing. A great combination of crazy, genius, and old wounds. Marasi was good too. She continued her growth and it was nice to see her a touch more confident and herself. I’m excited to see who she becomes in the later books.

And that ending!……And the epilogue! Anybody got climbing gear I could borrow because that is one impressive cliffhanger. A 90% satisfying ending but 10% sheer vertical drop. It’s books like this that make people wait until all the books are out before starting a series.

Robert
