So I did a dumb thing. I started reading the Lost Fleet Series. Then I couldn’t stop.

Captain John “Black Jack” Geary’s legendary exploits are known to every schoolchild. Revered for his heroic “last stand” in the early days of the war, he was presumed dead. But a century later, Geary miraculously returns from survival hibernation and reluctantly takes command of the Alliance fleet as it faces annihilation by the Syndics.
Appalled by the hero-worship around him, Geary is nevertheless a man who will do his duty. And he knows that bringing the stolen Syndic hypernet key safely home is the Alliance’s one chance to win the war. But to do that, Geary will have to live up to the impossibly heroic “Black Jack” legend.
Recommendation: I love this series.
Geary is not only the protagonist in this military sci-fi but also the main reason for reading. If his character was slightly different then the whole series would be trash. But his whining is kind of annoying. Just that since I binged this series every few days I was listening to the same complaints and the same issues. If I was reading I might have skipped or skimmed these sections but that isn’t so easy with audiobooks. There are some other main characters but most of them are forgettable in my opinion.
The setting gets more game time than you’d think but in a subtle way. Since Geary is from a century earlier he is always comparing things now to how they were then. Which gives the world a lived-in sort of quality.
The plot was intriguing. But I didn’t read this for it’s stunning returning home plot. I read this for the amazing space battles. The way war will be fought in the future? Maybe. Also, the real science that the author attempted to include. What happens when your fleet is spread out across light minutes, or the time distortion effects of traveling a fraction of light speed. How do you coordinate that kind of battle? Balck Jack will show you how.
The Narrator was average or maybe just better than. They kept the same narrator for the entire series which was nice.
I know this wasn’t the most detailed review ever but for a whole series its what you get.
