January Book Haul

Well, I’ve done it again. If I see books for close to a buck a piece then I just can’t help myself. Things like the picture below happen. I scour every shelf, weigh my feelings of want and need, inevitably convince myself I need them all, and then trying and figure how much I can explain away so Lisa will let me get them…..all of them.

This haul was made possible by the incredibly low prices at Deseret Industries, a thrift store of wondrous proportions. (Not a sponsored post…..just a PSA for bookaholics.)

How much did this literary dragon horde cost me? Only about $43. How many books? 32. How many books did I leave on the shelf? ….too many…..

  • Mockingjary by Suzanne Collins (Hunger Games #3) (Again…..)
  • Dune by Frank Herbert (Dune #1)

I don’t know if I have room on my shelves for these, but I’ll just have to make room. I’m sort of proud of myself, there are 4 books that aren’t SF/F and I’ve only read one of them. I think the most surprising is We Bought A Zoo. I enjoyed the movie and thought the book version might be better. (Same with Earthsea.)

With this haul I’ve finished off Lord of the Rings and start/add on several favorite series, Mistborn, Fablehaven, Animorphs, and Dragonriders of Pern. The entire Shannara trilogy was a great find, and there was 3/4 of the Heritage of Shannara there that I left behind. Let’s just say if they’re there when I go back, they won’t be when I leave. But now I have no excuse not to read them.

My biggest find is probably the hardcover copy of Dune. It’s a newer printing, 2002, but I love hardcovers and I’ve been looking for this classic for quite sometime. (Just got to read it now….I’m a horrible SF/F fan, I know.)

Picked up another copy of Mockingjay……and we can’t return it. I’ve considered doing a giveaway but don’t know if it would be something people would want. It’s used, not recently published and the third book in a trilogy. I might be able to get a few cents in store credit at a used bookstore. Or I could mark the crap out of it by underlining every time she whines. Any ideas?

  1. Wow, i am getting jealous – some great books there! I am reading ‘Dune’ right now, but very slowly…

Mercedes Lackey & Brandon Sanderson are always worth reading 🙂

I never read the Shannara Chronicles but watched the TV show and thought it wasn’t too bad. Was expecting much worse!

‘The Chronicles of the Necromancer’ is still on my wishlist!

    Happy reading!

  2. Ok, here I go:

Deathgate cycle was pretty good. Not what I was expecting by the end, but I’ve read it at least twice.

Holes was great. I loved the movie a lot as well.

Earthsea. Great trilogy, even if ya/middlegrade.

Shannara. I would recommend the first 7 books, then stop. You obviously won’t, but I thought that each successive book after took a downward turn [or just stayed exactly the same, hence highlighting the weaknesses one might let go in one book] until I stopped years ago. He’s still writing, and selling, though, so enough people like his stuff even now 🙂

Dune. If I had to choose one book, besides the Bible, to take with me where there were no other books, it would be Dune. It is my perfect book.

    1. Good to hear you liked Earthsea! It’s the one I’ve wondered about the most.

I get what you’re saying about Shannara. It’s so massive that keeping thing fresh would be challenging. You’re right, I probably won’t stop after 7, but now you got me really wanting to read those first 7.

      1. Just be aware my thoughts on the Earthsea trilogy are pretty biased. I read it for the first time when a young teen,so I have huge nostalgia goggles when reading it. But even back in ’12 I still gave the first one 5 stars…
