Jared,
You just need to read the book. As encouragement, I’ve just done it. There’s something special about the book and it’s not just nostalgia.
Title: The BFG
Author: Roald Dahl
Genre: Fantasy
Audience: Youth
ROTS Setting: EU,
Synopsis: Sophie is a young girl in an orphanage. When she sees something she shouldn’t Sophie is whisked away to Giant Country by a Big Friendly Giant.
Recommendation: Perfect for any Youth.
This whimsical tale is a wonder to read. And this actually was my first time reading it myself but it was read to us in class in second grade. Having said that I can’t help but make comparisons to the movie which I watched recently. There are some pretty big differences but I think the movie did a passable job.
The BFG himself is an intriguing character. He’s dynamic and has some depth there. Unlike the movie there was no previous human visitor which I found to fit him better. However Mark Rylance’s portrayal is so vivid I was constantly using it as a reference.
Sophie was better than in the movie which I came across with a chip on her shoulder. Book-Sophie is just a curious little girl who’s experiencing a bewildering ordeal. It works better and was more enjoyable.
The plot is simplistic but that’s where the magic happens. The movie adds color and effects but it’s sort of in your face. The written words allow the magic to come through so much more naturally where the imagination takes flight.

Ok fine…. After the movie I wasn’t sure, but I’ll give it a shot.
Eventually.
