My hesitation in starting this ambitious plan to read all of the core Dragonlance novels is nearly gone with this book. I feel the familiar fire that I had closely associated with this series and I can’t wait to read the next book.

Synopsis: The companions have been separated and the war against the dragon armies is becoming ever more desperate. But hope still blossoms.
Recommendation: Adult, maybe late teens. Any admirer of high fantasy should be familiar with this series.

We’re back in Kyrnn where myth and legend are becoming a reality. In the first book we were introduced to our group of traveling companions. They were the focus and the events merely hinting at the grander conflicts to come.

This book lays out all the pieces, and really shows that there is hope in this bleak world. The focus is on the bigger picture and separating the companions into two groups highlights this even more.

Laurana was introduced in the latter part of the first book and in this one she takes center stage. She is perhaps the most developed of all the characters by the end. When I was younger I found her emotional and annoying, but my mature self thinks she’s a bad-ass.

Tanis however starts whining.

For me this book is twice as good as the first one. Big event are happening and characters are being developed. Also something major happens that I have always found compelling when done in just this way.

    1. This trilogy makes up the foundation that all other Dragonlance books rest. However, it was designed to be compatible with D&D tabletop RPG so many elements are similar or closely related. I don’t know the entire publication history of the series, but I do know that the previous book was the first Dragonlance book ever. Also, Weis and Hickman are credited with designing, building and advancing the core history and storyline for the series, so anything they wrote is basically the bible for everything that is Dragonlance.
