Hey Jared,
I’m back in Dragonlance, with the Brother’s Majere. The whole time I was thinking about us as kids talking about these epic characters. If I remember correctly you really liked Caramon. I also recall thinking that, as kids, we were a lot like them…..expect for the sudden but inevitable betrayal part.
Title: Time of the Twins
Series: Dragonlance Legends; Vol. 1
Author: Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman
Genre: Fantasy
Audience: Adult
ROTS Setting: UU, Medieval, Higher Magic, Dragons
Synopsis: Sequestered in the blackness of the dreaded Tower of High Sorcery in Palanthas, surrounded by nameless creatures of evil, Raistlin Majere weaves a plan to conquer the darkness–to bring it under his control. Crysania, a beautiful and devoted cleric of Paladine, tries to use her faith to lead Raistlin from the darkness. She is blind to his shadowed designs, and he draws her slowly into his neatly woven trap. Made aware of Raistlin’s plan, a distraught Caramon travels back in time to the doomed city of Istar in the days before the Cataclysm. There, together with the ever-present kender Tasslehoff, Caramon will make his stand to save Raistlin’s soul. Or so he believes.
Recommendation: Adult, maybe late teens. Any admirer of high fantasy should be familiar with this series.
I enjoyed this more that Dragon’s of Autumn Twilight. With only 4 main characters and a simple yet engaging plot, I enjoyed the narrower focus and the amount of effort that each was given.
Raistlin is probably the star of the book, which is good given the plot. I’ve always enjoyed him and thought that he had a lot of depth, this book was no exception. Caramon was his usually bumbling emotional self. I’ve never understood quite why so many people like him. Tas makes an appearance as well. He took a bit too much of the spotlight than I would have liked, but given Caramon’s condition in the beginning someone had to be the responsible one.
The plot was very intricate, which fit Raistlin perfectly. I’m still confused with who did what and why but that’s right where I should be at the end to the first book. I’m looking forward to getting everything tied together and making sense.
The setting is absolutely wonderful! Sure it’s classic Dragonlance so it’s Krynn, but this time it’s focused on a place I’ve been dying to read more about. I won’t say more because it’s that awesome!
In general this story felt closer to the fantasy that is being published today. That similarity was refreshing after reading the Chronicles. I also have a bit of a confession……I think this was my first time reading this…..I know you’re probably freaking out right now. I never liked the relationship between Caramon and Raistlin. I thought it was toxic and had no interest in delving into it any further. So I didn’t…..I still don’t. However this is important to Raistlin’s character so I here and enjoying myself.
