Reply: Alcatraz Versus the Evil Librarians – Book 5: The Dark Talent – By Brandon Sanderson

Robert,

Funny thing your review came out today and today is when the library gave me the digital edition. So I powered through and here is the reply.

darktalent-replyTitle: The Dark Talent
Series: Alcatraz Versus the Evil Librarians; Book 5
Author: Brandon Sanderson
Genre: Fantasy
Audience: Youth
ROTS Setting: EU, Modern, No Higher Magic, Dragons
Synopsis: The “Final” book in the Alcatraz series. It has been a long time coming but we have it at last.
Recommendation: I recommend ages 8-12 as per the teacher aid information in the back of the book. This is a very short book I only read it across like 4 hours, disappointingly short.

SPOILERS TO FOLLOW

Seriously read Robert’s Review first as this is a response to his review.

Honestly, I loved Alcatraz. But now I remember how I HATE him. This is stupid. This doesn’t even feel like a complete book it feels like the first two-thirds of a book and  then the last third is ripped away at the last second. I actually looked at the digital percentage of the book and thought oh I am just getting to the good part brace myself for all the awesome conclusions, turned the page and “The End”. Sufficeth me to say I was angry but also found it really funny because Julia is about to read this and she is going to be pissed. It is going to be great. I feel like Alcatraz is like Joss Whedon’s Firefly, you tell your friends about it so they can really enjoy it and then you get to enjoy their frustration at finding out there is no more. I devoured every single page totally dejected until I found that little note at the end by Bastille. At last a narrator we can trust. I hope she really is the narrator of the last books. Also, I can only imagine the awesomeness of her with the breaking talent.

I recommend reading this as a physical book with real pages that way you can enjoy the footnotes better. Also, I am really happy that Alcatraz has a new publisher, they seem to be really excited about the series and will force the dang Brandon Sanderson to write more of these devils. Unless he really is killed for taking forever to finish the 5th book of a series? Seriously you don’t leave people on the hook for this long for a teaser trailer of the real book.

So Robert Alcatraz win or fail? Also if you could have some kind of Smedry Talent what would it be? Remember unlike superpowers it probably is not always useful.

Jared

  1. Ooo, you right. I can see Julia getting so pissed.

A Smedry talent? That’s a hard one. I’ll pick being exceptionally stubborn….because it would be nice if there were more benefits for that.

Well, you would be too stubborn to be humiliated, too stubborn to be forced to do anything, or be captured, and probably too stubborn to die.

I think my Smedry talent would be daydreaming. Not that it has any real benefit. That or being very annoying, I’m good at that.
