Dragonriders of Pern – Book 1: Dragonflight – Anne McCaffrey

Robert,

“Good. I can feel your anger. I am defenseless. Take your weapon! Strike me down with all your hatred, and your journey towards the dark side will be complete!” -Emperor Palpatine

Is this accurate? This is the feelings I’m getting from you because I am reviewing Dragonsriders of Pern first.

Title: Dragonflight61975
Series: Dragonriders of Pern: Volume 1
Author: Anne McCaffery
Genre: Fantasy, Science Fiction
Audience: Adult
ROTS Setting: UU, Medieval, Dragons
Synopsis: Lessa is a young girl who’s life changes when the dragonmen come to her Hold on the Search for a new Weyrwoman. Dragonriders protect the world from the Threads a dangerous enemy from another planet.
Recommendation: I can not say enough good things about this book.

I have read a few books in this series before.(Actually, they were books you had) I first heard about Dragonriders of Pern from a high school assignment to read a chapter/short story and write something about it. I don’t remember much about the assignment but I remember thinking this is the coolest thing ever, reading about dragons for school!

The story is not very long, complex, nor all that surprising, but it is an introduction, like a prologue, into a whole new world. Anne McCaffery and her son Todd have written 23 novels in this world, from 1967-2012. If you want a long and diverse series to dive into this is a great option.

To me, at least the characters are full of life and engaging. I hope they have the depth to survive more books and still be interesting. The setting and culture are fascinating, with what seems like a long history and a deep heritage. There is just this one little thing which seems like it will create many, many plot holes in the future. Oh, and I love the way she looks at dragons.

I know you enjoy this series, but wonder what you will find of it after your analytical reading this last year.

  1. Yes, the Palpatine quote captures my feelings perfectly. Now, as Sith Lord and Emperor you better keep reading this series or you will “witness the firepower of this fully armed and operational battle station!”

I expect I will continue to enjoy them whenever I get around to reading them. I might find more plot holes or rough parts but I’m as equally likely to pick up on the deeper nuance. I’m finding that same thing with my read through of Dragonlance right now.

      1. Sleep deprivation is not a problem I’m having. More like being trapped in a mental institution with a psychotic terrorist. Although I might be on a book high, I don’t know. Either way DL is speaking to me on multiple levels.
