Dragonriders of Pern – Book 2: Dragonquest – Anne McCaffrey

Robert,

So I listened to this one as an audiobook rather than reading it and wow it’s only like a 3-hour book. I’ve seen movies shorter than this book.

Title: Dragonquestdragonquest
Series: Dragonriders of Pern: Vol. 2
Author: Anne McCaffrey
Genre: Fantasy, Science Fiction
Audience: Adult
ROTS Setting: UU, Medieval, Dragons
Synopsis: 7 years have passed since Lessa went between times to bring to the future the old timer dragonriders. While they have been saved from the impending doom of the threads, all is not in harmony on Pern. Conflicts arise within the dragonriders and from the lord holders.
Recommendation: I really liked this. Still recommended for teens and adults if they can understand the sexual content and ideas.

We get a little more about the setting in this book. Finally a real glimpse or a clue as to the origins of humanity on this planet. That they have come from somewhere else.

McCaffery has made some brilliant characters. With antagonists rather than villains, yes there is a difference. There is a few character we get introduced to who really antagonize Kylara and F’lar of Benden Weyr. They deliberately take all of the good ideas F’lar offers and treats them as meddling and offensive. I’m not sure if we ever actually meet a villain aside from the thread. The whole cast seems to be very dynamic and exciting.

To me, I can’t wait to see what happens with the Fire Lizards. I honestly couldn’t help but want one. Also, the cliffhanger at the end just eats me up. I want to read the next book so badly just to find out what happens.

Jared

  1. Now is where the chronology gets crazy. The White Dragon is usually read next but technically the first two of the harper hall trilogy take place before it! It is insane.

I can only think of a few true villains in Pern and the only one that was a major character was in a stand alone prequel.
