The Orion Plan – By Mark Alpert

I’m late. A whole month late and I am sorry. I’d gotten a few weeks ahead so I took a bit of a break and just like always I’ve had trouble getting back in the groove. But no more! I’m back with this recently (three months ago) released book.

orionplanTitle: The Orion Plan
Author: Mark Alpert
Genre: Fiction
Audience: Adult
ROTS Setting: CU, Modern, Aliens
Synopsis:  An alien probe crash lands in New York City. A scientist, a gangster, a drunk, and a terminally ill woman all play critical roles in humanities first encounter with entities beyond our solar system.

Seraphim Series – Book 1: Skyborn – By David Dalglish

Jared,

Mixed feelings on this one. Really I don’t know if I should read the next one in the series. Either it will redeem the series or I will nitpick it apart. What should I do?

Skyborn.jpgTitle: Skyborn
Series: Seraphim; Book 1
Author: David Dalglish
Genre: Fiction
Audience: Adult
ROTS Setting: CU/UU/EU, Medieval/Future, Magic
Synopsis: “Six islands float high above the Endless Ocean, where humanity’s final remnants are locked in brutal civil war. Their parents slain in battle, twins Kael and Brenna Skyborn are training to be Seraphim, elite soldiers of aerial combat who wield elements of ice, fire, stone and lightning. When the invasion comes, they will take to the skies, and claim their vengeance.
Recommendation: Mid to late teens. I was actually surprised it wasn’t in the Teen or YA section. I’m placing this In Dispute because I want to like it, but it wasn’t that good.

Elantris – By Brandon Sanderson

Hey Jared

This is another book from Brandon Sanderson, but it’s his first widely published novel. I really liked seeing where he started from and the story is pretty good too.

Elantris_cover

Title: Elantris
Author: Brandon Sanderson
Genre: Fantasy
Audience: Adult
ROTS Setting: UU, Medieval, Higher Magic
Synopsis: Elantris, City of Gods, the White. Elantris, City of the Cursed, the Damned, the Forsaken. In the aftermath of the Reod and the subsiqent collapse of Elantris, the nation of Arelon is a broken husk of it’s former glory. The power vacuum draws in old enemies and allies alike. But Elantris isn’t dead. Yet.
Recommendation: Adult or late teen. This is Sanderson’s first published novel, so it lacks some of the finesse of his later works, but it is still well done.

The Obsidian Trilogy – Book 3: When Darkness Falls – By Mercedes Lackey & James Mallory

Jared,

The final book in the trilogy. It was great to read these again. Now I get to start of the sequel trilogy. I only vaguely remember bits and pieces so this will be great!

The Dagger and the Coin – Book 1: The Dragon’s Path – By Daniel Abraham

Hey,

I was very pleased with this book and I can’t wait to read the next one. The author of this book is also co-author of The Expanse series, so I was eager to see if his Fantasy skills were as good as his Science Fiction. I was not disappointed.

Author: Daniel Abraham
Genre: Fantasy
Audience: Adult
ROTS Setting: UU, Medieval, Dragons, Magic
Synopsis: A world on the precipice of something grand. A girl, a war hero, an oafish lordling, and the childhood friend of a king. Each plays a part, but no one knows the script. Unbeknownst to all, they tread the dragon’s path to destruction.

Dragon Jousters Series – Book 2: Alta – By Mercedes Lackey

I had no intention to review this book when I started reading it. Sadly there are several points that I feel need addressing. So here we are with a review. Please expect at least mild spoilers as it’s hard to make specific arguments or realizations without giving away some details.

Alta-Mercedes-LackeyTitle: Alta
Series: Dragon Jousters; Book 2
Author: Mercedes Lackey
Genre: Fantasy
Audience: Adult
ROTS Setting: UU, Bronze Age, Dragons, Higher Magic
Synopsis: Kiron, the serf formerly known as Vetch, has made it through the desert with his young dragon, Avatre. As he returns to his homeland of Alta, Kiron shows the superiority of tamed dragons over their traditionally wild-caught cousins. Now it is up to him to hatch, train, and lead a Wing of tamed dragons and their riders before it’s too late.
Recommendation: Teen, although with mature themes probably better suited to late-teens or adults. This book isn’t as good as the first, but still passable.

Robert’s Failed Attempts (DNF) #1

Here are some of the books I started reading but couldn’t finish, for whatever reason. They will be put under  “In Dispute” on The List. Sometimes beginnings or circumstances keep good books from getting finished and not because they are bad books. The Final Empire is a perfect example for me of a bit of a dry start combined with my just not being ready or receptive for that particular style. Once I was ready I discovered the awesomeness that is the Mistborn Series. Even now I wonder why I didn’t finish that first book years ago. So, just because I couldn’t finish a book doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a bad book. If it’s a bad book I’ll go out of my way to finish so I can tell you all exactly why it’s bad.

So, here are my recent failed attempts (DNF).

The Obsidian Trilogy – Book 2: To Light a Candle – By Mercedes Lackey & James Mallory

Here comes the review for the second book in The Obsidian Trilogy. I’ve broken down and ordered used copies of the entire trilogy and those in the next one as well. Public Library: ∞, Robert: 1. Eat that Library who doesn’t bothering to have the best books ever! Best thirty bucks I’ve spent in a long time. They’re all hardcover, which is my preference, and they were as cheap as the paperbacks.

To-Light-a-Candle-Mercedes-LackeyTitle: To Light a Candle
Series: The Obsidian Trilogy; Book 2
Author: Mercedes Lackey & James Mallory
Genre: Fantasy
Audience: Adult
ROTS Setting: UU, Medieval, Dragons, Higher Magic
Synopsis: Kellen Knight-Mage has grown a lot from the boy who was Banished from Armethalieh. His new Wild Magic abilities are increasing daily, but will it be enough to keep the Elves from killing themselves out of tradition? Only Leaf and Star knows.
Recommendation: Adult or late teens. Mild sexual content and innuendos. Moderate violence and high gore, but well balanced and done with purpose. I highly recommend this book!
