Animorphs – Book 3: The Encounter – By K. A. Applegate

Hello Jared,

The series continues….

theencounterTitle: The Encounter
Series: Animorphs; Book 3
Author: K. A. Applegate
Genre: Science Fiction
Audience: Youth
ROTS Setting: CU, Modern, Aliens
Synopsis: When Tobias, Jake, Rachel, Marco, and Cassie were given the ability to morph, they were also given one very important warning: Never stay in a morph for more than two hours. It seemed a small price to pay, since the kids know that humans everywhere are being forced to let slimy, spineless creatures creep into their brains. And the only way the kids can fight back is not to be human. But Tobias stayed in his morph too long. And now he’s a hawk — with a boy’s mind — forever. Tobias knows they can’t give up. That they all made a promise. So now it’s four kids and a hawk against a force that’s determined to destroy them. Or die trying…
Recommendation: Highly recommend this series.

Yes. Yes. Yes! So much yes! For me this is one of the iconic Animorphs books. It encapsulates all the best aspects of the series.

Tobias is such a great character but in the first two books he comes across as someone to be pitied. The target of bullies, an orphan passed between uncaring relatives, and a human trapped in the body of a hawk. Finally in this book we get his own point of view and we see it’s as bad as it’s made out to be. However, it doesn’t stay that way for long and that’s what makes him such a great character and why this book is one of the best books in the series.

Another turning point is that there are some small victories for the Animorphs in this book. We can see that a group of teens can fight a guerrilla war against this alien invasion.

I would suggest to anyone interested in the series that they should read at least to this book…..Probably the next one too, because if my memory is accurate then something big happens in the next book. **insert ominous foreshadow**
