Animorphs – Book 4: The Message – By K. A. Applegate

Hello again Jared,

The Bookshelf Blitz has been going pretty well. I’m starting to see how the month is going to shape up. The big thing is staying focused.

themessenger.jpgTitle: The Message
Series: Animorphs; Book 4
Author: K. A. Applegate
Genre: Science Fiction
Audience: Youth
ROTS Setting: CU, Modern, Aliens
Synopsis: It all started with the dreams. But Cassie didn’t pay much attention to them. She and her friends had all been having weird dreams since they’d first learned to morph. Maybe it was just some crazy side effect.
Recommendation: Highly recommend this series.

I’ve always liked Cassie. She has this genuine quality to her that I just really liked. In this first POV book for her, Cassie is grappling with the responsibly of being an Animorph. People, friends and strangers alike, are relying on her and her decisions. Her reaction is so very relate-able to me.

The plot is generally good, except for the whale ex machina which was the biggest problem in the whole book. Twice, in fact. It undermined much of what was done. For a children’s story it’s forgivable but for a middle-grade novel it felt just a touch immature.

On top of that a new and pivotal character is introduced. *duh duh DUH!* It makes this a must-read book, even if it has it’s weak points.

Robert
