Dragonriders of Pern – Book 2: Dragonquest – Anne McCaffrey

Robert,

So I listened to this one as an audiobook rather than reading it and wow it’s only like a 3-hour book. I’ve seen movies shorter than this book.

Title: Dragonquestdragonquest
Series: Dragonriders of Pern: Vol. 2
Author: Anne McCaffrey
Genre: Fantasy, Science Fiction
Audience: Adult
ROTS Setting: UU, Medieval, Dragons
Synopsis: 7 years have passed since Lessa went between times to bring to the future the old timer dragonriders. While they have been saved from the impending doom of the threads, all is not in harmony on Pern. Conflicts arise within the dragonriders and from the lord holders.
Recommendation: I really liked this. Still recommended for teens and adults if they can understand the sexual content and ideas.

Snapshot – By Brandon Sanderson

Jared,

Sorry this is a day later than I said. Things have been crazy this past week and weekend. But neither illness, sleep deprivation, Pokemon Go, or freakishly long books could keep me from reading Sanderson for too long.

snapshot

Title: Snapshot
Series: Reckoners Universe
Author: Brandon Sanderson
Genre: Fantasy
Audience: Adult
ROTS Setting: EU, Superpowers (sort of)
Synopsis: Davis’s job as a cop on Snapshot Duty is straight forward. Sometimes he is tasked with finding where a criminal dumped a weapon. Sometimes he is tasked with documenting domestic disputes. Simple. Mundane. One day, in between two snapshot assignments, Davis decides to investigate the memory of a call that was mysteriously never logged at the precinct, and he makes a horrifying discovery.
Recommendation: Adult or late teen. Definately recommend it, especially if you like crime/mystery or are just a Sandeboxer like me. (Ya, I totally think Sanderson fans should be called Sandeboxers. And yes, I’m that level of nerd.)

Blood on the Stars – Book 1: Duel in the Dark – By Jay Allan

How’s it going, Jared?

I’m glad I could find this on Amazon Unlimited. He’s a fringe author with an impressive number of titles under his belt. I say “fringe” because he’s mostly indie published but with a few conventionally published too. Clearly he enjoys his work and wants it in the hands of readers, which is a plus in my book. Also it looks like most of his other books are on AU too so I’m looking forward to reading more of his work.

More importantly the sequel for this book, Call to Arms, is out today!

Imperial Radch Trilogy – Book 2: Ancillary Sword – Ann Leckie

Hey Jared,

I’m chipping away at my giant reading list. Mostly focusing on series I’ve only partially read so I don’t forget too much and then move on. This being one such book.

I have to say I love the cover art on this series. The abstract/painted look combined with the very Sci-fi theme just speaks to me on a visceral level.

ancillaryswordTitle: Ancillary Sword
Series: Imperial Radch Trilogy; Book 2
Author: Ann Leckie
Genre: Science Fiction
Audience: Adult
ROTS Setting: CU, Distant Future, AI, FTL
Synopsis: Breq is a soldier who used to be a warship. Once a weapon of conquest controlling thousands of minds, now she has only a single body and serves the emperor. With a new ship and a troublesome crew, Breq is ordered to go to the only place in the galaxy she would agree to go: to Athoek Station to protect the family of a lieutenant she once knew – a lieutenant she murdered in cold blood.
Recommendation: Still could have been in the YA section. The style may not be for everyone, it’s basically a gender-less society so a persons sex or sexual preference/orientation are completely ignored. This came across more strongly than the previous book but it didn’t feel like one of the main themes so I still enjoyed it.

Sixth of the Dusk – By Brandon Sanderson

Hey Jared,

You’ll noticed that I’ve moved my Youth and Novella (or smaller) reviews from my usually Tuesdays to Mondays. There are a lot of new books being released in the coming months, especially in March, so the move will let me keep posting reviews twice a week. For those Tuesdays without a new release to announce we can come up with something.

Also, this is an actual Cosmere novella. A pretty good one too both as a standalone and as one of the many facets of the Cosmere universe.

sixthoftheduskTitle: Sixth of the Dusk
Series: Cosmere
Author: Brandon Sanderson
Genre: Sci-Fi/Fantasy
Audience: Adult
ROTS Setting: Magic, Advanced Tech, Cosmere
Synopsis: The world is changing faster than Dusk can keep track of. As a trapper on one of the islands known as Pantheon. His ways are simple, steeped in tradition, and all of them are needed to survive the insanely hostile environment of the islands. But progress must be made and the islands, and their secrets, must be tamed.
Recommendation: A great read for Teens and up. If you like Sanderson then you already know what you’re getting. This novella is highly recommended.

Dragonriders of Pern – Book 1: Dragonflight – Anne McCaffrey

Robert,

“Good. I can feel your anger. I am defenseless. Take your weapon! Strike me down with all your hatred, and your journey towards the dark side will be complete!” -Emperor Palpatine

Is this accurate? This is the feelings I’m getting from you because I am reviewing Dragonsriders of Pern first.

Perfect State – By Brandon Sanderson

Yet another short novella by Sanderson. He probably wrote it while putting off Alcatraz 4: Dark Talent. It was very short.  This will also be very short. Like you could read it over a decent bowel movement short.

25188109Title: Perfect State
Series: Cosmere
Author: Brandon Sanderson
Genre: Sci-Fi
Audience: Teen
ROTS Setting: Advanced Tech, Cosmere
Synopsis: God-Emperor Kairominas has conquered and unified the whole world with his amazing magic. He loves his people, although he has changed how the minds of his favorite servants work. But that is to be expected. His “rival” provides a welcome distraction challenging Kairominas to duel against robots. Now he faces the biggest challenge ever. Finding a woman.
Recommendation: Teens would find this funny. Also as another book in the Cosmere they might as well get started reading and learning, because unless Sanderson stops writing they will have a lot more to read in this universe.
